On the 10th September 2017, Rick Nugent, who has recently turned 50 years of age, Director and Senior Consultant at Foster Tachographs Limited is undertaking the most gruelling Ironman Challenge.

This is NOT a triathlon as most know them, this is a painful, exhausting and a true test of human endurance!  Rick is doing this to raise money for MACMILLAN CANCER and he is hoping that, having been in the industry for over 30 years the industry will also support him to raise £4000.00.

For those unsure of what a true Ironman entails there are 3 parts, a Swim, a Bike Ride and a Run.  It’s just they’re a little bit longer than a normal triathlon, all to be completed within 17 hours, maximum time limit.  Here is what Rick will be doing:

SWIM – 2.4 miles in the sea – that’s about 155 lengths of your local pool

BIKE RIDE – 112 miles – that’s further than Birmingham to Preston, London to Leicester or Edinburgh to Carlisle – this is not on motorways, but on some of the mountainous roads of Wales

RUN – if you can call it a run – it’s a FULL MARATHON (26.2 miles), again through the beautiful hills of Pembrokeshire, although I’m not sure Rick will be appreciative of the scenery at that stage.

To give an idea of how difficult this is, the Brownlee brothers, in the Olympics, do a 0.93-mile swim, 24.8-mile bike and 6.2 mile run, a total of 31.93 miles. That’s JUST 22.7% of the 140.6 miles that Rick will have to cover!!

When he’s finished it would be great for Rick to know that his efforts, not just on the day, but in all the training beforehand will have been worth it as he raises money for Macmillan Cancer, a worthwhile cause for anyone who has been affected by cancer either directly or indirectly in their lifetime.

Gordon Humphreys, Managing Director of Foster Tachographs Limited said “Rick has proved an inspiration to many and we hope that the effort and time he has dedicated to training and preparatory events for a cause that is close to his and many people’s hearts is rewarded through sponsorship to make the pain worthwhile.”
